Self portrait Fujifilm XPro1 + 35mm f2

So many new amazing cameras are launched every year. Yet one remains my personal favourite for its simplicity and ability to capture images with a sense of dimension. The Fujifilm XPro1 is still amazing. Paired with the wonderful 35mm f2 this self portrait with one hand illustrates the power of great light, great lens, and great camera. Raw files edited in Lightroom f4, 1/125.

Fujifilm XT20 + Voigtlander 58mm f 1.4 (and bounce flash) for portraits

There’s no doubt the Fujifilm XT20 is an incredible camera, both in terms of use and output. It’s small, lightweight, powerful and versatile. So too is the phenomenal Voigtlander 58mm f1.4 lens. Compared with many other 50mm lenses I own/have owned/have shot with, this is one of the best autofocus 50mm IMO. It’s manual focus, so you need to be confident of shooting with and EVF and focus peaking (or similar aid).

I decided to take a few very quick portraits with the Fujifilm XT20,Voigtlander 58mm f1.4 and a LightPix Labs flash (manual only no TTL so all the settings must be set physically. The flash was bounced off the ceiling and the shutter speed was 1/125, aperture was f2.8 and ISO 1000. I use auto-ISO on Fujifilm cameras as you can program the minimum and maximum across 3 custom settings. Flash setting were at 1/16. No face tracking was available as its manual focus, however I did you focus peaking with the red option. And yes, children move and it takes some time and skill to nail focus.

Fujifilm XT20 and 50mm f2 (and flash) creates incredible portraits

There’s no doubt the Fujifilm XT20 is an incredible camera, both in terms of use and output. It’s small, lightweight, powerful and versatile. So too is Fujifilm’s 50mm f2 lens. Compared with many other 50mm lenses I own/have owned/have shot with, this is one of the best autofocus 50mm IMO. The best I’ve used is the 58mm Voigtlander f1.4, but thats a manual focus lens requiring an adapter (Nikon mount).

How I shot this with a 35 yr old flash

Canon 70-200mm f4 IS review – why I bought the f4 rather than the f2.8 version

I love this lens. It’s light, easy to use and produces beautiful pictures when coupled with the Canon 6d. Here’s my non technical impression.

Initial impressions – it’s so much smaller and lighter than the f2.8 version. The focus ring and zoom rings are solid and feel just right. The hood attachment is simple and it’s very well balanced on a 6d. The switches are all in the logical positions and are easy to operate. The fact that it can fit in a smaller camera bag and is lighter is huge for me.

Ease of use – just attach and shoot.

Features – the IS makes about a stops difference, and is only really effective when shooting non moving objects or in low light. But it does allow you to avoid those unnecessary vibrations that could ruin your shot. The other switch are for MF/AF and focal distance changes, i.e. up to 3m or from 3m to infinity……it just allows you to focus faster. The lens hood is solid, the lens will take filters (although I don’t like using them, so I just keep the hood on), and the image quality is superb.

Image quality – superb. Nothing else to say.

Compared with – vs f4 non IS – the only difference is the IS, so if you’re shooting above /125 most of the time the IS probably won’t make a difference. Vs the f2.8 IS and non IS – IS differences the same as the above, but the 2.8 will let more light in, so if shooting in low light is important to you whilst hand holding, then this option is probably best for you. Plus the f2.8 versions are bigger and heavier.

Medium format digital – exciting but 

Medium format film photography was at another level for resolution and detail compared with the 35mm format. For magazine work, posters, and large format prints it was an understandable format……for film. Move forward to 2017, where even the resolution from an iPhone, let alone micro 4/3, apsc or full frame options, is more than most people will ever need. Online photo sharing and delivery is the #1 distribution channel for digital photos, even film photos that have been scanned. Other than extreme pixel peeping, billboards or large format art prints, where is the market for this? Or are we seeing the early stages of medium format sensors becoming much cheaper and better so that dslrs of the future will all be medium format allowing extreme cropping? I’m pondering this question as I’ve been watching several reviews and online videos from all sorts of people claiming this is the an absolute must have camera. Really? For what purpose? Who’s printing huge files for commercial work? I’d guess about a handful of people. Are the range of full frame and apsc cameras not coping?
